Spanish Major Declaration Workshop (New CAB 485)

The fall Spanish Major Declaration Workshop will be Monday, September 11 at 6:00PM in New CAB 485

In order to declare a major in Spanish, students must complete SPAN 3010 (Grammar & Composition I), or the equivalent, with a grade of C or better.

The workshop will be presided over by Spanish Faculty Advisors who will review the highlights of declaring a Spanish major, answer questions from students, assign advisors, and sign major declaration forms during the workshop.

Sueño de una noche de San Juan (SIPFilmFest 2017)

This 3D animated film is a free adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night's Dream. The legend says that on Saint John’s Night (the summer solstice), humans can reach the world of fairies and elves, where all dreams come true. But Elena does not believe in fairies. Her father, the Great Duke Theseus, an idealistic governor lost in dreams, is ill. As she tries to make him feel some excitement again, she parts on a voyage in search of Titania, the queen of all fairies, the only one that can help her.

La puerta abierta (Marina Seresesky, Spain): Rosa is a prostitute who inherited the profession from her mother, Antonia. Antonia now believes she is the famous actress and singer Sara Montiel, making Rosa’s life extremely difficult. Rosa does not know how to be happy, or something keeps her from achieving happiness. The arrival of an unexpected new member to her absurd and awkward family will provide her with a new opportunity to give happiness another chance. Watch the trailer here.

What Does a Document Do? Restoring Memory and Reinventing the Landscape for Masewal People in Mexico

Over the last 3 years, Alessandro Questa (PhD candidate, Anthropology and Mellon Indigenous Arts Fellow) has served as a witness and mediator between Masewal people and Mexican federal authorities during the process of restoration, protection, and reevaluation of certain local Indigenous documents from the 17th century. His experience navigating between different regimes of value and systems of knowledge led him to ask "what is a document and what can it do?"

Spanish Majors Design New Course for First Responders

Recent graduates Marc Blatt (CLAS 2017) and Sabhi Singh (CLAS 2017), both Jefferson Scholars and Spanish majors, spent their final year at UVa determining how to give back to the community and improve the world around them.
