Black Lives Matter: Department Statement of Solidarity

June 3, 2020

The Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese at the University of Virginia stands united with our students, University colleagues, and Charlottesville community members against racism, police brutality, and the historical oppression of Black and Indigenous people. We join the national call to reject systemic bias and violence against all People of Color. At this moment in particular—amidst anti-Hispanic and Latinx discrimination in the U. S., and the long history of dehumanization of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color globally—we commit ourselves to social justice and a pedagogy of compassion. This Department’s mission is to research, teach, and build programs oriented towards intercultural understanding and global education. #BlackLivesMatter

In response to the extraordinary challenges of moving online in the middle of the semester, the Center for Teaching Excellence organized the Thank A Prof/Thank a TA campaign. Click here to learn about the campaign or to thank your professor/TA.

Reading these notes have brought us joy in a difficult time, and we're excited to share them.

Here are some of our students' comments:

Thank you for being one of the best instructors I've ever had! Your cheerful spirit and patience made the classroom experience all about learning, and loving what we learn. I was genuinely happy to come to your classes and I feel like the material you have taught will be with me for years to come. I have never truly felt genuine care from an instructor towards their students until I was in your class! -- ITAL 1020

Thank you for being such a wonderful professor. Learning Spanish has been the best part of my last year and I hope to build on the foundation you helped me with. -- SPAN 1010

Thank you for teaching me Spanish for both of the past two semesters! You made learning Spanish fun and easier by playing Spanish music for us and the meditation minute was something cool I've never had a teacher do. Those fun activities made getting up early to learn fun and relaxing. -- SPAN 1020

Thank you for a great semester. If there is one class I looked forward to every day, it was your class. Your positive attitude always brightened my day, especially during online classes. Your class made me enjoy learning the Spanish language and helped me become confident in my speaking skills. I hope you forever maintain your joyful spirit; it is inspiring. Thank you once again, and have a great summer! -- SPAN 1060

Professor Young, I just wanted to say thank you for a great semester! Not only did you help me take giant leaps as a spanish student but your class provide a consistent pick-me-up every single day. I know that I may not have always stayed on task haha but your class always put a smile on my face. Thanks for truly caring for your students and being there for us, long live SPAN 1060! -- SPAN 1060

Thank you Profesora Garcia Prados for making this year so enjoyable. Your in-class activities, laid back nature, and constant enthusiasm have made this class one of my favorites so far at UVA. I hope you continue running your class in the same way because you make learning Spanish exciting every day. I very much wish I could have you as a professor next for SPAN 2020. Thank you for all the memories and knowledge, and I wish you the best. -- SPAN 2010

You did a wonderful job supporting and encouraging my learning in and out of the classroom. I hope to see you on grounds in the fall. -- SPAN 2020

Dear Profesora, Thank you for being one of the best and most influential professors I have had at UVA so far and making the transition to online classes much easier and as interactive as possible. Your commitment to helping and connecting with all of your students is something that I feel like makes you stand out as a professor. Overall, I am thankful for you being such an understanding and caring professor and for supporting your students during the switch online. I felt a handwritten note was more personal, so please read my message in the attached photo!! Thank you :) -- SPAN 3010

Thank you for putting so much time and effort into our class! I am so impressed and grateful for how great of a professor you were under such difficult circumstances. I can't even imagine how difficult it would be to have a young child during this time while also having a full time job, but you have done an amazing job. Have a great summer! -- SPAN 3010

Thank you for being so accomodating during the pandemic. You made learning worthwhile and engaging despite the circumstances. Thanks for a great semester! -- SPAN 3010

Dear Profesora, I cannot thank you enough for your course and genuine interest in helping me when I was struggling in the course. I am very grateful for your time and how you devised a strategy that worked for me specifically to succeed in your class. I hope I made you proud in following your advice, putting in the hard work, and succeeding. I believe that the content of your course is the most valuable and applicable I will ever take at UVA. I will take the lessons learned with me throughout my career. You truly believed in me as a student, and I will take that forward even more. Muchisimas gracias. -- SPAN 3050

Querida profesora Rabke, muchas gracias por su flexibilidad y amabilidad durante este tiempo difícil. Ud. ha hecho que todos nuestros vidas sean más fáciles mientras todavía alentando nuestro aprendizaje. ¡GRACIAS! -- SPAN 3300

This class totally changed how I saw my major and what direction I wanted to take. While teaching us about the history, this class also helped me realize the resources we have at our fingertips (Special Collections, UVA Library system, etc.) You went above and beyond what you needed to to make us all feel welcome and safe in your classroom. Regardless of our ability level, all of the students knew you were someone to come to about anything - Spanish related or otherwise. Thank you, Prof. Bigelow! -- SPAN 3420

Dear Professor, Thank you for continually making our health and well being a priority. You were the first professor I received an email from when we first heard we were going to be transitioning to virtual. Your kind works and efforts to support us as students does not go unnoticed. Thank you for reiterating your care for us and for always asking how we are doing. And for making our day with visits from Lily! Thank you. -- SPAN 3420

Thank you so much for your efforts to adjust the course after classes went online. You have shown me and every student in the class that you genuinely care about our wellbeing and that you hope to support us without compromising our academic experience. Your prompt communication and comforting words helped me adjust to quarantine life, and I sincerely appreciate your dedication to us students. I am so thankful for everything that I have learned and for all of your feedback and encouragement throughout the semester. ¡Gracias! -- SPAN 4040

Giulliano Prize in Spanish and Virginia Louise Garth Scholarship

May 7, 2020

The Department is proud to announce that the Giulliano Prize in Spanish was awarded to Javaria Abbasi and Katerina Silis was awarded the Virginia Louise Garth Scholarship

Giulliano Prize in Spanish given to a fourth-year graduating student on the basis of demonstrated academic excellence in Spanish language study and a contribution to the growth and nurturing of Spanish at the University. Javaria Abbasi is a 4th year student who is double majoring in Spanish and Political and Social Thought. Javaria is writing a thesis about European and Indigenous cartographic thinking in sixteenth-century Mexico. Javaria's project has required her to think deeply and creatively around and through archival silences. With a sophisticated methodological approach, Javaria juxtaposes European history and philosophy with classical Nahuatl-language codices and Nahua maps to show how [some of the most celebrated works of Spanish imperial literatures and histories depended on and subsequently erased Nahua cosmologies.  Next year, she will be studying in the Latin American studies program at Oxford University.

Virginia Louis Garth scholarship is awarded an undergraduate student from Virginia who has demonstrated outstanding academic performance and who has contributed to the life and well-being of the Spanish Department. This scholarship is offered by the Garth family in honor of their late daughter. Katerina Silis is a third-year student doing a double major in Spanish and Neuroscience.  She lives in the Casa Bolívar and has received one of UVA’s most important grants for researching the therapeutic use of marihuana.  In her free time, Katerina is a volunteer at the hospital.  She is a generous person who is always ready to help the community. She also helped organize the poetry series in the fall of 2019.  Katerina has also organized the music and poetry series in the Casa Bolívar.  Her studies at UVA have combined her equal love for science and the humanities.

Please join us in congratulating our two outstanding Spanish students!

March 12, 2020

There is a lot of information and misinformation about COVID-19 (Coronavirus), a virus that was delcared as a global pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 12, 2020. The university will take every measure to ensure the safety and well-being of students, faculty, staff, and community members in the face of this pandemic.

As of March 12, classes are suspended until Thursday, March 19. At that point, all classes will move to online modules rather than face-to-face instruction.

The information below was reported on March 13. Please check here for updates. News specific to the College of Arts & Sciences is available here.

Students: you will be contacted by your professors with detailed plans about class meetings, assignments, and assessments. Please contact your professors ASAP if you do not have reliable access to the Internet, a safe place to return to off campus, food security, and other hardship circumstances. All federal work-study students will continue to be paid regardless of hours worked. If you need immediate financial assistance, you should apply to the Student Life and Leadership fund, a rainy day fund distributed by the Student Affairs Office (https://www.virginia.edu/coronavirus). A Financial Resource Working Group is also being developed. Details will be posted to the website above. You can also contact our volunteer network.

If you do not have reliable access to the Internet, you should make alternative connectivity arrangements, such as going to another location or procuring a WiFi hotspot from their cellular provider. In cases of financial hardship, students can submit a request for financial support to Student Financial Services to help pay for these technology-related costs. Please visit https://sfs.virginia.edu/techfundinghelp.

If you need to stay on campus, look for an email sent by Housing and Residence life on Wednesday, March 11. Complete the survey requesting to stay on grounds or email housing@virginia.edu immediately to request to stay on grounds. The option to request to stay ends Wednesday, March 18 at noon.

Faculty: please prepare a memo for undergraduate and graduate students outlining how the remainder of the semester will be organized as we move to online classrooms. You should specify plans for modes of instruction, assignments, and assessments. Instructors in the 1000-2000-level courses will receive specific guidelines from course coordinators and preceptors. If you need help learning Zoom, adapting your teaching style to online platforms, or navigating your choices for instruction, assignment sequences, and assessments (e.g., synchronous or asynchronous instruction), please visit https://teachingcontinuity.virginia.edu/. You can book a 30-minute help session with the A&S Instructional Technology Support Team using this link. As you adapt your face-to-face course for online environments, be sure to consider the diverse learning needs and life circumstances of students in your classes.

Trevor Dadson

In Memoriam -- Distinguished Visiting Professor Trevor Dadson

January 29, 2020

The Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese has a long history of inviting distinguished scholars and artists to campus. During their residences in Charlottesville, these artists and renowned academics have taught graduate seminars, undergraduate courses, creative writing workshops, delivered public lectures, and offered readings of their work, all free and open to the public.

The Department mourns the untimely, sudden death of Professor Trevor Dadson of Queen Mary, University of London, who was scheduled to be our current Distinguished Visiting Professor during the spring semester, 2020.

A scholar well-known to all with an interest in Iberian Studies, Professor Dadson embodied the great traditions of British Hispanism. His passing marks not only the loss of a good friend to many of us in the Department, but a major setback to the world community of scholars. A fuller accounting of his stellar academic career and his contributions to scholarship can be found via the following links: https://www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk/fellows/trevor-dadson-FBA and  https://www.qmul.ac.uk/sllf/modern-languages-and-cultures/people/emeritus-academic-staff/profiles/dadson.html. Professor Dadson's untimely passing was marked by the Real Academia Española.
